Never underestimate the value of a focal point when you are decorating. Your walls, if decorated right, can be a great focal point and set the tone for your whole room

When you enter a room, the first thing that you notice is whatever’s at your eye level - so whether you’re putting up artwork or styling your walls, whatever you choose will make the first impression on your guests.

When decorating, the one key point to remember is that you should always try to have a single focal point. That focal point can be an entire wall of portraits or the fireplace that you highlight with an accent wall.

Whether you’re planning on starting from scratch or are just looking to add some style to your rooms, we’ve collected some great wall décor ideas to help you create your perfect home.

Kitchen wall décor ideas

The kitchen is the heart of any home, so unless ultra-modern sleek designs are your dream you shouldn’t be afraid to add a splash of personality on your walls. Accent walls are a great way of adding a little bit of colour and warmth to a room without the colour taking over and can be used to bring character to any room.

The way to do an accent wall well, is to choose a wall that already has a feature and is symmetrical. In a kitchen, this could be the oven wall or the window wall, to draw the eye and highlight the room’s best aspects. Remember, if you choose a bold colour then you’ll want to bring accessories of that colour into the room to tie everything together.

If you don’t want to repaint, you could consider creating a focal point out of a wall using oversized artwork or installing floating shelves to display ornaments or mementos. Oversized clocks are also a really popular feature wall trend at the moment, which if considered, could bring a functional yet stylish addition to your kitchen.

Mirrors create a great focal point for a room, particularly in the living room. They open up the space and increase the light in a room so a large mirror over the sofa can make your room feel bigger and brighter. If you can, try placing your mirror opposite your window for maximum effect.

A gallery wall can also look fantastic in a living room, so fill a wall with a display of your favourite pictures or paintings for a great modern design. Picture shelves are a fantastic way to create this effect, just put up some floating shelves and add your favourite framed photos for a stunning feature. Or create your gallery with a full wall, floor-to-ceiling, bookshelf that you can fill with your books and display pieces.

Your living room is a great place to display large pieces of art which can be highlighted by using wall lights. If you haven’t got any large art pieces why not try blowing up your favourite photograph on canvas for a stunning, personal design.

If you think that putting up pictures is too pedestrian for you, why not simply decorate the wall itself with plaster panelling or decorative moulding? This can give a great period feel to any room. If that sounds like too much work, you could simply mount items directly on the wall such as antiques or even natural elements such as a branch or driftwood for a great rustic feel.

Bedroom wall décor ideas

The first thing to remember when doing anything to your bedroom is that has to suit your (and your partner’s) personality. No matter how cool you think minimalist styles are, if you’re a floral print person you’ll be happier in the long run with patterned wallpaper.

The focus of a bedroom is nearly always the bed so it’s easy to know which wall to use as a focal point – just look at the one your bed has the most contact with. In a bedroom you have the opportunity to take risks, so why not consider making your accent wall out of wooden laminate to bring a rustic warmth into the room.

Don’t be afraid using darker colours in your bedroom as you want your bedroom to create a sense of warmth, colours such as burgundy and navy can help a room feel cosy instead of restrictive, particularly in Winter, which can help you to relax. If you do go for a dark colour then consider balancing this by painting the ceiling an off-white to keep the feeling of space.

Whatever your needs or style preferences, you can easily lift the look of a room by giving your walls some TLC. Whether you’re adding art, mirrors, shelves, or using accent walls to highlight room features, create fantastic focal points in your rooms to get your dream home.
